How are seismic surveys carried out?

In the case of the Crogga field, the seismic work will be conducted by a boat which will criss-cross the licence area over a number of weeks, sending and receiving sound waves to and from the seabed and below.

When conducting the seismic over the license area, the vessels will be towing an array of hydrophones to collect the signal from an acoustic source on board the boat. The acoustic source will send sound waves through the water and underlying rocks with the reflected sound waves being picked up by the hydrophones to provide a 3D image of the geology below the seabed.
