Currently the UK natural gas supply (and hence the IOM) receives 43% from UK production, 44% from continental Europe and 13% from LNG. This process is significantly more carbon intensive than producing our own natural gas locally in the Isle of Man.
Natural gas is an important part of the Island’s transition to renewables and a zero carbon future. It plays a critical role in our existing infrastructure which we are committed to until at least 2030’s. Securing the Isle of Man’s own supply of natural gas will reduce the impact on the environment compared to importing, reduce costs, give security of supply and provide significant revenue for the Island.
